Safe, Elegant, & Permanent
A well-designed walkway does more than just get you from point A to point B—it safely guides foot traffic, dramatically boosts your home's curb appeal, and defines the architectural flow of your entire landscape. From grand, interlocking front-entry paver paths to rustic, winding flagstone garden trails, FreshWater Landscaping builds walkways that are flawlessly level and structurally permanent. We focus on heavy-duty base engineering to ensure your path remains a solid, trip-free surface through decades of brutal Minnesota winters.

We work with a massive variety of premium materials, from Unilock and Belgard pavers to locally quarried natural stone, to perfectly match your home's architecture and your personal taste.
In the West Metro, the biggest threat to a beautiful walkway isn't foot traffic—it's the violent Minnesota freeze-thaw cycle. When moisture trapped in the heavy, localized clay soil freezes, it expands with thousands of pounds of force. If a paver walkway is installed on a cheap, shallow dirt base, this "frost heave" will violently buckle the stones, creating severe trip hazards and an ugly, wavy path after just one winter.
At FreshWater Landscaping, we engineer our walkways to survive the climate. We excavate deep into the subsoil, install commercial-grade woven geotextile fabric to prevent sinking, and build a massive foundation of mechanically compacted Class 5 aggregate. This scientific, ICPI-certified approach creates a rigid, free-draining foundation that completely neutralizes frost heave, guaranteeing your walkway remains perfectly flat for decades.
A path is only as good as what lies beneath it. We treat every walkway with the exact same uncompromising structural integrity as a full-sized commercial patio or driveway.
A sinking, buckling walkway is a massive tripping liability. We bring ICPI-certified installation techniques, heavy excavation machinery, and an eye for immaculate detail to every West Metro property we transform.

Manufactured pavers are best for formal, high-traffic entryways because they are perfectly uniform and provide a completely level walking surface. Natural flagstone is ideal for winding garden paths where you want a more organic, rustic look. Both materials are incredibly durable when installed over our engineered Class 5 aggregate base.
For a primary front entry walkway in the West Metro, we highly recommend a width of 4 to 5 feet, which comfortably allows two people to walk side-by-side. For secondary garden paths, side-yard access, or stepping stone trails, a width of 3 feet is usually sufficient.
We intentionally select premium pavers and natural stones with textured, slip-resistant surfaces that provide natural traction. However, any surface in Minnesota can become icy. We recommend using sand or salt-free, concrete-safe de-icers (like Magnesium Chloride) to melt ice without degrading the finish of the stones.
Yes. If the pavers themselves are in good structural shape, we can perform a highly cost-effective "lift and relay" service. We pull up the shifting stones, excavate and re-compact the failing sub-base, level the bedding sand, and reinstall the original pavers perfectly flat. This modularity is one of the biggest long-term benefits of pavers over poured concrete.
Yes. Permeable interlocking concrete pavements (PICP) are designed with wider joints and an "open-graded" crushed stone base. This advanced system allows heavy rainwater to filter directly into the ground rather than running off into your lawn or Lake Minnetonka. It is an excellent choice for managing drainage and meeting strict municipal impervious surface limits.
