Permanent Ground Cover & Erosion Control
Tired of paying to refresh faded, washed-out mulch every single spring? Decorative rock installation provides a permanent, high-end look that never loses its color, decomposes, or washes away in a heavy Minnesota thunderstorm. At FreshWater Landscaping, we specialize in heavy-duty stone installation across Chanhassen and the West Metro. We ensure precise sub-grade prep and commercial weed barriers are installed correctly the first time, so your investment stays immaculate and weed-free for a decade or more.

While organic wood mulch is great for delicate garden beds, rock is the undisputed king of durability and low-maintenance landscaping. It is the only reliable choice for high-traffic zones, steep drainage slopes, and critical areas around your home's foundation.
The secret to a pristine, long-lasting rock bed isn't the stone you chooseβit's what is hidden underneath it. We refuse to take shortcuts on ground prep, because a bad base guarantees a weed-infested mess within two years.
When homeowners (or cheap contractors) try to save money by laying rock directly over old dirt or using thin, paper-like weed barriers from big-box stores, disaster is inevitable. The sharp edges of decorative stone will instantly puncture cheap fabric under the weight of the first snowfall.
Once that barrier is compromised, the nutrient-rich Minnesota clay soil pushes aggressive, deep-rooted weeds up through the rocks, making the bed impossible to pull clean. FreshWater Landscaping utilizes commercial-grade, woven geotextile fabric. It is engineered to withstand hundreds of pounds of puncture pressure while still remaining permeable enough to let rainwater drain. We build a permanent, physical shield between the soil and the stone.
Moving 10 tons of rock by hand is grueling, destructive work that can easily ruin your lawn if done improperly. We bring the heavy equipment and the expertise to execute massive stone installations quickly and cleanly.
Keep your heavy new rock perfectly contained and separate from your lawn with professional steel or stone borders.

No weed barrier is 100% foolproof, but we use heavy-duty, commercial woven geotextile fabric that aggressively blocks root growth from below. Over the years, windblown dirt will eventually settle between the stones and sprout minor surface weeds, but because their roots cannot penetrate our fabric, they are incredibly easy to pull or spray.
Upfront, yes. Decorative stone typically costs 2 to 4 times more than premium mulch due to the raw material cost and the heavy machinery required to move it. However, because Minnesota weather won't wash it away or decompose it, you don't have to replace it every year, meaning a rock bed usually pays for itself in just 3 to 4 years.
For most standard decorative stones in the West Metro (like 1.5" river rock or trap rock), we require a strict installation depth of 3 inches. This engineered depth ensures the landscape fabric is completely covered, preventing UV degradation, and stays hidden even if the rocks shift slightly during heavy Minnetonka rainstorms.
Yes, natural stone acts as a thermal mass and retains significantly more heat than wood mulch. For this reason, our horticultural team recommends pairing rock beds with drought-tolerant or "heat-loving" native plants, rather than delicate, shade-loving perennials that prefer cool, moist soil.
We absolutely do not recommend this. Installing heavy rock over old mulch forces the mulch to decompose rapidly underneath the fabric, creating a nutrient-rich "mud" layer that aggressive weeds love to root in. We always excavate and remove the old mulch first to guarantee a clean, long-lasting installation.
